I create coiled pine needle baskets. A coiled basket is made by stitching a continuous coil of pine needles to itself. The needles are continually fed into the center of the coil to keep the diameter of the coil consistent.
My baskets are made with long leaf pine needles that I gather locally. I use natural brown and green needles and I also dye some of the needles. The baskets are started after the needles have been sorted, washed, dried, and soaked again to make them pliable.
Pine needle art is one of the oldest crafts known. Some say it predates pottery. Although coiling is very time consuming I find it relaxing and rewarding. I appreciate the fact that I am making a useful functional basket with pine needles that I have gathered that would soon decompose if left on the ground.
