MELINA CASTRO

PAHOA, HAWAII

Born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica, I moved to the U.S.A in 2001 where I was first exposed to jewelry design. It was then I discovered my love for metals. My creative exploration has included graphic design, photography, pottery, mixed media sculpture and costume design; all of which are all still influential in my work today. My jewelry studio is located on our off-grid homestead in one of the most rural parts of the Big Island of Hawaii next to the very active Kiluea volcano. We catch the rain to drink and harvest the sun’s energy to power our tools. This way of living helps me remain present and stay in tune with the elements around me. My main inspiration is the beauty of nature and the raw fierce sensuality of the flowing lava. I see them as mysterious and powerful, unapologetic and uncompromising in their creativity. Traits that I embrace and strive for in my own work. Each piece of jewelry is hand crafted using a variety of hand tools and traditional silversmithing techniques. My work is characterized by its rustic-earthy look emulating a weather-worn appearance. Contrast between matte patinas and shiny finish gives a rich depth of character to every piece making it truly unique.
