WILLIAM HELMS | NORTH CAROLINA

Bill Helms is a retired residential designer / builder from High Point and a North Carolina native.

The creative bug has always been a major part of my life. through out my school years I studied art, architectural drafting and worked on sets and lighting for theater productions. In the late 60's I studied design at Ringling school of art in Sarasota, FL and then went on to earn a degree in photography at Randolph community college. While in school I worked with one of my professors renovating a 100 year old farm house in Randolph County, which eventually led to a career as a residential designer and builder for 38 years.

In 2007 I had a sudden wake up call with throat cancer, which resulted in the loss of my voice and some major life changes. After retiring I needed a new focus and with the encouragement of an artist family member I began painting in watercolor. The following year I expanded into oils, which has now become my primary medium.

As a lifelong hiker, camper and photographer I have spent a great deal of time outdoors observing the many moods of nature, which has been a major influence on my choice of subject matter. Now, working both plein air and in the studio I strive to capture the ever changing beauty of the landscape. I am also exploring other subjects from portraits to still life.

It has been a real joy to be able to continue my creative journey and find a new way of engaging with the world around me and share it with others.
