AMANDA BURY | NORTH CAROLINA

I rely on the central role of utilitarian objects as vehicles for nourishment and utilize the inherent role of pottery as the physical conduit for daily contact with sustenance. I am troubled by the disconnection I witness between humans and the natural world and seek to make work which reveres and celebrates that which brings food from across the world to our tables. I draw from a conceptual framework grounded in my study of cultural anthropology, and focused on the web of complex intersections between culture, ethics, commerce, history, rituals, community, and environment that our sustenance is tethered to. This intricate web of systems serves as inspiration for broad conceptual ideas, formal decisions, and approaches to surface.
